TYPES OF CASES

FAMILY LAW

Malbrough, Lirette & Zeringue (A Professional Law Corporation) has extensive experience in all aspects of family law. The attorneys have tried very difficult cases involving a variety of family law issues, including divorce, child custody, child support, alimony (temporary and permanent), community property, adoption and federal dependency exemption. Our attorneys have traveled throughout the state of Louisiana to handle such cases, but have primarily litigate cases in Terrebonne, Lafourche, St. Mary, Assumption and Ascension parishes.

Our attorneys are well trained, having attended annual continuing legal education seminars in several areas of family law. Joan Malbrough and Kathryn Lirette are both certified family mediators, and are certified to handle collaborative divorces. Our staff is also very well trained in handling issues which require immediate attention. If the attorney is unavailable, the paralegal on the case can usually provide the client with immediate help until the attorney can handle the issue.

Our attorneys are experienced in crises intervention. All attorneys on staff have obtained immediate custody orders in situations where children were in danger. All attorneys are trained in child support calculations, and have extensive experience in dividing community property. We have a network of experts in various fields who work with us in providing appraisals, child custody evaluations and business evaluations.

CRIMINAL DEFENSE

When a client is charged with a crime, our team goes to work. Whether it is a felony or a misdemeanor, the Malbrough, Lirette & Zeringue team of attorneys can handle the job.

Three of the four attorneys on our staff have had contracts with the local public defenders office, giving them a wide array of experience in handling many types of criminal matters. We provide our clients with the immediate attention they deserve, and quickly schedule bond reduction motions, preliminary hearings, motions to suppress and motions to quash the indictment if this is in order. We have been very successful in getting charges reduced or dismissed in many cases, and we have successfully negotiated plea bargains that have been to the benefit of our clients.

Our firm has handled many Driving While Intoxicated cases. We know what to look for in the police reports and how to handle the case from arrest to acquittal. We have tried cases before both 6 and 12 person juries. Our experienced legal team can handle any type of criminal case in any parish in Louisiana.

PERSONAL INJURY

Joan Malbrough began her career working for a law firm that handled strictly personal injury matters. Since that time, the law firm of Malbrough, Lirette & Zeringue has handled various personal injury cases involving auto accidents, wrongful death, work related injuries, premises liability, and maritime injuries. Our legal team reviews and researches the issues in the case, obtains proper medical treatment for our clients, and goes to work to get the best possible outcome for the client. All personal injury cases are handled on a contingency fee basis. We only get paid if we collect for the client.

SUCCESSIONS

No one likes to think of handling the estate when a loved one dies, but for most individuals, legal counsel is necessary in these situations. Kathryn Lirette, the firm’s leading Succession litigator, has handled hundreds of successions in Louisiana. From the very simple to the extremely complex estate, our firm is ready to handle the issues. The opening of the succession is the first step in finalizing a deceased’s affairs. Our staff is very conscious of the sensitive nature of handling these matters, and is competent to do so.

CIVIL LITIGATION

Malbrough, Lirette & Zeringue has handled a number of civil litigation matters, including contract disputes, account collections, personal injury defense, and bankruptcy litigation. While we do not profess to handling every type of case, we will review the facts of any case and discuss with the client the likelihood of successful litigation.

WILLS

All adults in Louisiana should have a will. Writing a will is complex and requires expert knowledge of the law. If a will is drafted incorrectly, it may be invalid, leaving the deceased’s estate to be distributed by operation of law as though he/she did not have a will. Our legal team can draft a proper will in just a few minutes and make sure it is properly signed, witnessed and notarized. We can also handle Powers of Attorney and Living Wills. In most cases, the drafting and signing of the will can take place in one visit and in less than an hour at a reasonable price.
